When Christians are educated to believe that the
following things are the priorities and essentials
of being a Christian and evidence of salvation, then
WHY should they be concerned about being a follower
of Jesus and making disciples?
Go to church ..
Read the Bible .. (at least the parts that appeal to
our self life)
Believe "right doctrine"
Pray .. (for things we want)
"Accept Jesus and be saved"
The messages they get in church reinforce any kind
of religious activity EXCEPT dependency upon and
loyalty to Jesus Christ.
ie,
Give tithes and offerings to the church if you are a
Christian.
Participate in Sunday School, choir, a series of
boring services each week, boards and committees and
other activities that promote the institution but
distract from being followers of Jesus Christ and
doing His works (which are always outside of the
walls of the meeting place .. ALWAYS .. but the
activities inside the walls are what are promoted
and they take up all the free time of these
potential disciples).
The division of laity and clergy. Jesus did not
create this order. It sends all the wrong messages.
Until every believer is a minister, and every
minister is a servant, then there is no hope for
discipleship being essential, not optional.
Now, to answer your question: You cannot motivate
nominal Christians. It is just like an alcoholic ..
you cannot get them into treatment until they
acknowledge, from within themselves, that they have
a problem they cannot handle.
But, churchianity has been substituted for
discipleship when these people found themselves in a
crisis and sought "salvation"! And, with the full
force and authority of "the church", "doctrine", the
"H" word (heresy), and tradition, these people have
been told that churchianity (called Christianity) is
their evidence of salvation. How are you going to
change the message once they have been told
authoritatively that they have found salvation????
I've been dealing with this online since 1997 .. you
cannot convince a churchian that their model of
Christianity and salvation is wrong. They become
personally abusive to the messenger .. a real
commentary on their belief system! The people who
visit the site and start asking questions that move
them away from the system are those who have already
started awakening to the reality that the system,
institution and doctrinal malarkey do not solve the
sin problem in their lives.
If you want to try to develop disciples within the
system, you will continually be frustrated, for the
very reason I stated above .. it is a change in the
message which has been taught with the ultimate
force of human authority.
Look at the difference in the following beliefs
about Jesus Christ ...
º
Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God; He
was buried for three days; He arose from the grave,
triumphant over death; He now rules over all
principalities and powers, and is the Head of the
combined gathering of the people of God;
and, the only way to eternal life and reconciliation
with God is through Jesus Christ, and being born of
His Spirit.
º
Jesus Christ is our only point of Reference and His
Words are our guide for faith and living.
º
The Gospel of the Kingdom is: repent and believe in
the Gospel; deny self; take up your cross daily;
lose everything; and follow Him. Only the
proclamation of this Gospel will make disciples.
º
Salvation comes through obedient faith in Jesus
Christ. We are not only saved from the penalty of
sin, but the Salvation of the Lord includes
overcoming the power and practice of sin through the
empowerment of His Word and His indwelling Holy
Spirit. The most important reality of our faith is
experiencing God's work in us to enable us to live
and be like Jesus.
º
Jesus said of His gathering of disciples: where two
or three are gathered together 'in My Name', He is
in the midst. That is sufficient. We are not to be
called rabbi or leader or pastor, for we have One
Teacher and Leader and Shepherd - Jesus of Nazareth
- and we are all brothers or sisters. The only
authority that exists in Jesus' Church is His Words.
Men and women can only represent His authority by
presenting His Word and doing His works. He is the
Head, and every disciple is to be connected directly
to Him.
º
Our task is witnessing the Message and Person of our
Lord Jesus Christ, and making disciples.
º
All who are walking in obedient faith to Jesus
Christ and are born of His Spirit are members of His
Church. Therefore, membership in an organization is
irrelevant. Staying in fellowship with Christ,
obeying His Words and being directly accountable to
Him is the essence of being the church.
